ABC 33/40 is reporting that one person is dead after a car flipped on I-59 near the 141 exit in Trussville.
Chief Russell Ledbetter of Trussville Fire and Rescue has confirmed with The Tribune that there was one fatality in the single car accident. Ledbetter says that officials from the Jefferson County Coroner’s office are on the scene.
I-59 has been closed until rescue and law enforcement personnel complete their work. Motorist should avoid the area and take alternate routes until the highway reopens.
Based on photos from Erin Toffler of 33/40, the accident appears to be under the North Chalkville bridge
. Traffic on North Chalkville is backed up into the project area.
The Alabama State Trooper’s office in Birmingham reports that they are not working the accident, but Trussville police are on the scene along with Trussville Fire and Rescue.
Toffler reports that Lifesaver was called to the scene and witnesses now report that the helicopter did arrive and transported at least one of the victims.
