The Pinson City Council unanimously passed a motion tonight to allocate $12,500 each to Pinson Valley High School, Rudd Middle School, Pinson Elementary School and Kermit Johnson Elementary School for the 2012-2013 school year
.
The council allocates money to the city’s four schools each year. These funds can be used for any needs that the schools have.
“We have been releasing our primary school allocation in October so that it overlaps more closely with the school year,” Mayor Hoyt Sanders said.
Councilman Joe Cochran said that the city also offers discretionary money to the schools for specific projects throughout the school year.
In addition, the council unanimously passed a resolution to renew its contract with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for Enhanced Law Enforcement services.
Through this contract, the sheriff’s office places four contract deputies in the city limits of Pinson for 40 hours per week per deputy. These contract deputies serve in addition to the existing beat deputies in the city. The cost for the city to participate in this program is $339,890.26 per year.
The council also unanimously passed a resolution to appoint David Gillian to fill John Harrison’s position on the Board of Zoning Adjustments. The council previously appointed Gillian to Harrison’s position on the Planning Commission at the Oct. 16 council meeting. At that time, a first reading of the resolution to appoint Gillian to the BZA was presented.
Harrison passed away in September before his term in either position had had expired. Gillian will be serving Harrison’s remaining five years on the Planning Commission. His term on the BZA will end in December, at which time the council will either reappoint Gillian to this position or appoint a new member.
The newly elected Pinson Council will meet at city hall on Monday Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. to be sworn into office by Justice Mike Bolin. A brief organizational meeting will follow.
