Activity rooms at the Trussville Senior Activity Center are always busy, and do not show any signs of slowing down.
Director Sandi Wilson said the current programs offered by the center need room to grow, and the building will be undergoing some additions this year.
“We have outgrown what we have,” Wilson said
. “We are going to cover and enclose the entire back porch, so there will be a nice, big room with windows all around for our exercise equipment.”
Operated by the city under the Parks and Recreation Department, the center has been in its current location since 1999 and provides a free place for members of the Trussville community to relax, take classes, play games and have time with other senior members. Wilson said there are close to 500 members registered at the center.
“We tend to average 75 to 80 people a day,” she said.
Activities offered at the center range from free games of pool to dancing classes to a daily meal.
During the week, members of the community ages 55 and older can enjoy activities including exercise, yoga, line dancing, square dancing, games, pool tournaments and rook tournaments.
The center also offers monthly health screenings, including free blood pressure checks.
Seniors will be taking a “mystery trip” Jan. 31 and also have other outings planned for the spring and summer.
The center will host its second annual Mardi Gras celebration Feb. 15 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Activities include the crowning of a king and queen, and live entertainment.
“Last year, people dressed up and we had a dance,” Wilson said.
The center now offers Wii bowling nights.
“We have started Wii bowling and are going to start a league,” Wilson said. “The Center Point, Clay, Hoover and Homewood centers all have teams. I am hoping to start a team here and we can compete with other local teams.”
Wii bowling is currently played at the center Wednesdays at 1 p.m.
“There is never a dull moment,” Wilson said. “We are here to have fun.”
