By Gary Lloyd
The last time the Pinson Valley boys’ basketball team won an area tournament, senior guard Marcus Merriweather was in grade school.
On Monday night at Center Point, Merriweather was leading Pinson Valley to the title.
Pinson Valley gutted out a 57-56 thriller of a win over rival Center Point, earning the Class 5A, Area 11 championship.
Merriweather, the tournament MVP, split a pair of free throws with :16 to play, and Center Point’s Darreyl Purnell missed a fadeaway heave at the buzzer. All five Pinson Valley starters — Merriweather, Zach Jackson, Johnathan Marable, Devin Gary and Kerry Griffith — were named to the all-tournament team.
“I told these guys, ‘If you keep believing, you keep working, you keep fighting, it’ll work out in our favor in the end,’” said Pinson Valley head coach Clint Argo. “Tonight, they never gave up. They never gave up.”
Merriweather, Marable and Jackson were named to the regular season’s all-area team.
