“Alabama and the Civil War” will be the featured topic at Thursday’s Clay Historical Society meeting.
Sam Harris will deliver the speech at 7 p.m. at Clay United Methodist Church’s fellowship hall.
The public is invited to this meeting and the society would especially like to have any descendants of Civil War soldiers attend. Light refreshments will be served at the meeting.
Last month, Fay Crawford spoke to the society about the United States Nurse Cadet Corps during World War II.
The society is also looking to identify cemeteries in Clay and Chalkville that include Civil War soldiers.
The society has already identified six Civil War soldiers buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Clay and nine at Clay United Methodist Cemetery.
The six at Mt. Calvary Cemetery include James Samuel McClendon, V.C. Montgomery, Henry C. Pybus, John Nelson Self, Jesse T. Taylor and William Taylor Jr. The nine at Clay United Methodist Cemetery include James J. Chandler, Uriah William Cosby, Thomas Jefferson Darden, Gideon Holmes, Green B. Huddleston, John Wesley Partain, George W. Price, Haymond B. Ware and James Jackson Weems.
