TRUSSVILLE — Last season, the Hewitt-Trussville boys and girls soccer teams both made the Class 6A state quarterfinals for the first time in school history.
The boys team was ranked No. 10 in Class 6A, finishing with a 15-7-3 record, losing in the quarterfinals to No. 2 Vestavia Hills. The girls team was also No. 10, finishing with a 17-4-1 record after losing to No. 4 Mountain Brook.
This season, the boys want to make more history.
“We’ve got what it takes to be a very talented team,” said sophomore right winger Mitchell Disharoon. “We made history last year, going further than any other team before us, and I believe we’ll make history again this year.”
Junior striker T.J. McGettigan said the team has already overcome hardships and injuries, more than it would have liked to.
“Definitely a state contender this year,” McGettigan said. “We’ll make it as far as our team chemistry takes us.”
Senior midfielder River Coop agreed with McGettigan, saying that if the team stays away from injuries, he believes Hewitt-Trussville is “one of the top teams in the state.”
Hewitt-Trussville opened the season with a 3-1 win at Class 5A No. 5 Homewood.
Senior captain Tanner Fulton, a center midfielder, said head coach Allen Adams has changed a few things up from last season, leading to a great outlook for this season.
“I really like how the team is looking this year,” Fulton said. “We have a strong team with a lot of experienced players.”
Fellow senior captain Isaac Searcy, a left winger who scored both Hewitt-Trussville’s goals in a 3-2 loss at Clay-Chalkville last week, said this year’s team has high expectations, one of them becoming state champions.
“But it will all be determined by the attitude and work ethic we have throughout the season,” Searcy said.
