CHALKVILLE — A 15-year-old boy shot in the jaw on a Chalkville basketball court March 11 was shot accidentally, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said today.
Sheriff’s detectives immediately began an investigation March 11. Deputies were initially told that an unknown gunman had fired a single shot at a group of teens playing on a basketball court, Chief Deputy Randy Christian said. A bullet struck the victim and the suspect fled on foot.
Earlier this week, a teen male friend of the victim contacted detectives and told a different story, Christian said. He told them that he and the victim had been playing with a gun when it went off and a round struck the victim. He said that he got scared and hid the gun. Accompanied by his mother, he took deputies to where the gun was hidden. It has been recovered, Christian said.
The case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
