CLAY — Top-ranked Vestavia Hills cruised to a 6-0 win over host Clay-Chalkville in the quarterfinals of the Class 6A soccer playoffs Saturday night.
Vestavia Hills led 2-0 at halftime and scored four quick goals in the second half to put the game away.
Vestavia Hills played tough defense, not allowing the Cougars’ offense to get many shots on goal.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the guys,” said second-year Clay-Chalkville head coach Wade Lyon.
Clay-Chalkville finishes the season 13-9. Vestavia Hills (23-2-1) will now play in the semifinals.
“That team is the best team in the state,” Lyon said.
Clay-Chalkville won 2-1 at Oxford to open the playoffs and bested rival Hewitt-Trussville 2-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Clay-Chalkville will lose 12 seniors off this year’s team heading into next season.
