JEFFERSON COUNTY — Former Jefferson County Board of Education member Kevin Walsh has helped raise $179,500 in scholarships given by the Boy Scouts of America for 2014 seniors.
Walsh works with local Jefferson County Schools principals and counselors to get names of worthy B and C students who have teacher recommendations, no disciplinary actions on their records, and who are known as hard-working students.
The program is funded by corporate support and individual Boy Scouts supporters and encourages first-generation college attendance in the families of those winning the scholarships.
The nine schools and the amounts earned at each include: Clay-Chalkville High School, $2,000; Pinson Valley High School, $16,000; Corner High School, $42,000; Hueytown High School, $7,000; McAdory HIgh School, $72,000; Minor High School, $11,000; Pleasant Grove HIgh School, $12,500; Shades Valley High School, $1,000; and Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School, $16,000.
