TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville City Council on Thursday appointed a new member to the Trussville City Board of Education.
Kathy Brown was appointed to fill the vacant role. Danny Garrett left the board after his election to the Alabama State House of Representatives.
With this move, school board member Stan Garrett takes Danny Garrett’s spot, meaning his term ends in May 2016. Brown takes Stan Garrett’s spot, which has a term ending in May 2015. The city council can extend board members’ terms on the school board.
Brown has served on the Trussville City Schools Foundation and Athletic Foundation. She said she’s “very honored” by the appointment.
“I cannot wait to serve,” she said.
Board President Bill Roberts said he looks forward to working with Brown.
“I couldn’t be more pleased,” he said. “She loves our schools.”
Trussville City Council President Alan Taylor said there were 18 applicants for the position and four were interviewed. He said the process was “pretty in depth” and a lot of “gifted and talented people” applied.
The other three who were interviewed were Wendell Gibson, Bill Hamilton and Greg Carroll. Trussville Mayor Gene Melton said he decided not to release the names of the other applicants “due to the fact that I failed to advise the people who requested to be considered for the BOE appointment that I would make their names public.”
