AUBURN — The Opelika-Auburn News reported that Auburn freshman H-back Jakell Mitchell was shot and killed early Sunday morning during a party at the Tiger Lodge apartment complex in Auburn.
Mitchell was also a graduate of Opelika High School.
According to the Twitter feed of Auburn University Emergency Management, there is no known threat to the campus at this time as police work to apprehend a suspect.
WSFA reporter Allen Henry said via Twitter that Capt. Will Matthews of the Auburn Police Department told him that officers are interviewing witnesses. Police are gathering the names and car tag numbers of everyone leaving the apartment complex.
Tiger Lodge, formerly known at University Heights, was the scene of the shooting deaths of former AU football players Ed Christian and Ladarious Phillips, and Auburn student Demario Pitts in 2012.
The apartments are on West Longleaf Drive just off South College Street in Auburn, according to the Opelika-Auburn News.
