PINSON — Pinson Valley High School’s recent college application campaign was a huge success, according to Jefferson County Schools.
The first day of the five-day campaign began with teachers decorating their doors to feature the college or university they went to. It was also Nerd Day, and students dressed like TV stars on “The Big Bang Theory.”
The second day was professional attire day, and students dressed as if they had an interview. The third day was career dress-up day, and students dressed to reflect their career choice or interest.
The fourth day was college T-shirt/sweatshirt day, to show support of the students’ college of interest.
The final day was vote day, with students using their phones and QR codes to vote on the best door decoration.
Taqua Lewis, Pinson Valley High School’s guidance counselor for the 11th and 12th grades, coordinated the event.
“We had 28 door decorations and out of 236 seniors there were 178 college applications, so that’s 75 percent participation,” she said. “It is a process to change a school’s culture and we made a great step forward.”
