TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville City Council last week authorized Mayor Gene Melton to go out to bid to cut down and remove timber from wooded areas around Deerfoot Parkway.
Melton said there are 1,471 acres of wooded areas not visible from Deerfoot Parkway — only from above — that have been damaged in storms throughout the years, including the Jan. 23, 2012 tornado.
Melton said the sale of the timber could generate as much as an estimated $500,000 for the city of Trussville. Timber is sold by the pound, Melton said.
In other news, the city council authorized Melton to hire Milam & Co. to add a parking area behind the right field fence at Spradling Field, which is located at the corner of Parkway Drive and Cherokee Drive. Melton said Trussville City Schools is contributing $5,000 toward the project, since school buses will likely use the area.
The city council last week also honored Hewitt-Trussville High School senior Taylor Elliott for winning the Miss Alabama Teen USA Pageant in November. She will represent Alabama in the Miss Teen USA Pageant in the Bahamas on Aug. 22.
The next city council meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb. 10 at the Trussville Civic Center at 6 p.m.
