TUSCALOOSA COUNTY — Two Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s deputies were injured this past Friday after they fought with a suspect who attempted to flee the scene of a traffic stop.
According to media reports, the incident occurred on North Hagler Road just north of Hembree Road in Tuscaloosa County between Samantha and Windham Springs. The deputies initiated a traffic stop, where they learned that the individual had warrants out for his arrest.
The suspect then fled, with both officers jumping into the vehicle. The officer on the driver’s side wrestled the suspect before he fell out of the vehicle and was briefly dragged. The officer who jumped in the passenger’s side fought with the suspect as the vehicle rolled off the side of the road before crashing into a tree.
The deputies were taken to DCH Regional Hospital in Tuscaloosa and are expected to be fine.
The suspect, Hunter James Waldrop, is now in custody. Waldrop is charged with theft of property first degree, escape third degree, resisting arrest, and two counts of assault third degree.
