PINSON — The Pinson City Council last Thursday voted to amend a resolution that changed the name of a section of Alabama Highway 75.
The city council in February 2014 voted to rename Highway 75 from Saturn Lane to the Highway 151 intersection Pinson Boulevard.
The city council recently learned that a portion of that stretch is in the city limits of Birmingham. The new resolution states that the renamed portion is from the intersection with Highway 151 to the intersection of Buzzbee Road.
Pinson Mayor Hoyt Sanders said at last month’s meeting that he had written a letter to Birmingham Mayor William Bell about the matter but hadn’t heard back. At last week’s meeting, that appeared to still be the case.
“We’ll hopefully work that out in time, but we need to move forward,” Sanders said.
The hope of city officials is that the matter is fully resolved by April 11, when the city will hold its bicentennial celebration. New street signs bearing “Pinson Boulevard” could be posted by then.
The city council in early February 2014 proposed that the road be renamed Pinson Boulevard. This stretch of highway currently has three names in the city limits: Highway 75, Center Point Road and Center Point Parkway. The goal was to differentiate the Center Point and Pinson sections of Highway 75 to cut down on confusion.
Only the highway name will change and numerical addresses will not be affected.
In other news, the city council approved a resolution extending the bid period for occasional debris removal to Friday, Feb. 13 at 3 p.m. No bids were received in the original time period. This is not to be confused with the city’s garbage collection bid, Councilman Joe Cochran said.
The city council also named winners of the 2014 Christmas parade float contest. Kermit Johnson Elementary School placed first, the Pinson Valley FFA took second and First Baptist Church in Pinson finished third.
