ORANGE BEACH – The Hewitt-Trussville soccer teams escaped the wintry weather of central Alabama and headed to the beach over the weekend to take part in the Island Cup, hosted by Gulf Shores High School.
The Lady Huskies (6-2) had a great deal of success, posting a 3-1 record during the tournament. On Friday, they defeated Daphne 7-1 in the morning session, before shutting out Austin 5-0 in the afternoon. The two victories clinched the team’s spot in the semifinals Saturday morning.
Hewitt-Trussville won a thriller over a highly ranked Mountain Brook squad to advance to the finals, beating the Lady Spartans in a shootout 4-1 to win the overall match, 3-2. In the title match, the Lady Huskies fell to Thompson, 1-0, as they were unable to make a dent on the scoreboard.
“We had an exciting run and beat some good teams along the way,” Lady Huskies head coach Justin Pino said.
Hewitt-Trussville’s boys team (2-3-1) also competed in the Island Cup, posting an 0-2-1 record. The Huskies fell to Fairhope by a tally of 2-1, and were shut out 4-0 by McGill-Toolen on Friday, and fought to a 2-2 draw with Daphne on Saturday morning.
