SPRINGVILLE – Authorities have confirmed that a 24-car accident occurred roughly three miles past Springville’s 156 exit on Interstate 59 North around noon.
The collision happened at mile marker 159, causing traffic to detour to U.S. Highway 11. Cars are being directed off the interstate at the second Springville exit going northbound by Walmart. However, it’s been confirmed that the left I-59 lane is now open for northbound cars.
Twenty-four vehicles, including three 18-wheelers and an RV, were involved in the pileup, which is believed to be the result of smoke coming off a vehicle fire nearby.
Reports have shown that traffic remains clear down Highway 11 in the Trussville area.
According to authorities, 10 people have been hospitalized. Their conditions are unknown at this time.
