TRUSSVILLE – Jefferson County Sheriff Mike Hale has partnered with Fresh Air Family to launch Prepared, Not Scared Summer Camp, which will be coming to Trussville on July 6.
The camp is designed to teach kids self-defense, safety and survival skills. Students entering the fourth through the seventh grade will be eligible to take part in the five-day camp.
“Campers will be taught by instructors from Fresh Air Family, Sheriff Department School Resource Officers and Hoover Tactical Firearms, which is also a sponsor,” read a press release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. “The summer camp will teach students what to do in a variety of situations such as in bad weather or if an active shooter enters their school. It will also teach basic survival skills such as wild food foraging, fire building, field first aid, building a shelter from natural materials, finding water and reading a map.”
From Monday, July 6 through Friday, July 10, Prepared, Not Scarred Camp will be held at the Trussville Athletic Center. Students will learn life skills from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
To register for the camp, call Amanda Clark at (205) 335-3483 or email Amanda@FreshAirFamily.org.
Coaches will teach campers what to do and how to survive in the wilderness. They will also teach students how to escape predators in a non-violent manner, and how to identify the difference between poisonous and non-poisonous plants and animals.
“Today’s world can be unpredictable,” said Whit Wright, managing partner at Hoover Tactical. “Survival skills build confidence and help kids keep cool heads in emergencies. The gun safety lessons will teach kids (not to) touch, assume it’s loaded, and never point a gun at anyone.”
