From staff reports
While patrolling Interstate 459 North near Interstate 20 about 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputy spotted a minivan traveling at a high rate of speed. The van was allegedly traveling more than 90 miles per hour in a 70 mile per hour speed zone, according to a press release.
The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the van, and found it occupied by two adult men and a three year old male child.
During the contact with the adults, the deputy said they admitted they had been smoking marijuana earlier in the day in the van and assured him that there was no more marijuana in the car. According to the release, the occupants then invited the deputy to search the van.
The deputy searched the interior of the vehicle and found no more marijuana. When he looked under the hood he found a soft sided cooler that contained nearly twelve ounces of methamphetamine with a street value of $4,000.
The men were identified as 50-year-old Derrick T. Dennis of Stone Mountain, Ga., and 34-year-old Christopher LeShun Davidson of Cedar Bluff, Miss. Both were arrested and charged with trafficking methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. They remain in the Jefferson County Jail with bond set at $1,006,000 each as of Monday.
The child was identified as Davidson’s son. He was placed in protective custody at DHR.
