Last week when I found out about the Clay sign on Chalkville Mountain Road being vandalized, I was nearly astounded. Astounded that anyone could be so bored that throwing a rock at a sign designed to make one their city a better looking place seemed like a good idea.
Those directional signs are so important to those who may not know the way around the town. I would know because when I went to talk to the mayor about the story, I turned right at the bottom of Chalkville Mountain Road and went to the old city hall building. I drove past Deerfoot Pkwy. before realizing my mistake.
On the way back it hit that if the directional sign for City Hall had been in place, I wouldn’t have made the wrong turn.
So, not only are those signs aesthetically pleasing, but they are more informative than one might think. In fact, I would have trouble pointing anyone to many of the buildings in town, and the directional signs would be helpful.
The signs were crafted by Brad Ward at the Sign Shop, and he does fantastic work as a sign producer and designer. He’s also got a pretty good background in photography, I hear. Nonetheless, they are very nice.
Residents are concerned about the signs as evidenced by the response from our story last week, and for good reason. These types of items are important to the community, and for more than just looks and information. It shows that the city is making an effort to be better, look better and in turn, make the residents feel better.
Be proud of these signs. Be proud of the effort. The number of people who work hard to make Clay, Pinson and Trussville a beautiful place to live is also astounding. Those people deserve your cooperation and your help, not your litter or vandalism.
Obviously, this might seem directed at the vandals, but it applies everywhere and to everyone. Be mindful of what is going on in your city and be proud to live here.
And when the sign is restored, please don’t knock it down, who knows when I’ll need to find the library or senior center?
