CENTER POINT – After taking last Friday night off, No. 1 Clay-Chalkville will now jump back into Class 6A, Region 6 action this week as Center Point (1-4, 1-2) welcomes the Cougars to Bowman Field.
The Eagles, coming off a disappointing 1-9 season, have started 2015 in the slow lane. Head coach Bennie Hall has yet to see his offense score more than 14 points on any opponent this year.
The Cougars average more points per game (46.8) than Center Point’s combined total through five weeks of play (30). Hall and the Eagles are coming off a 35-2 loss against Parker last week.
With a win, Clay-Chalkville would climb to 3-0 in region play. They currently trail Gardendale (3-0) in the Region 6 standings. The Rockets are also in league play this Friday with a trip to Shades Valley on the docket. Gardendale will visit Cougar Stadium on Oct. 23 for the final region test of the year.
But first the Cougars have to take care of Center Point, who’s only win came against Woodlawn in a 6-0 contest. Clay-Chalkville downed the Eagles last fall by a count of 49-6.
The Cougars will take the field on Friday night posting an average of 46.8 points per game. Excluding the 6-0 win over Woodlawn, Center Point is allowing opposing offenses to roll off 36.5 points per contest.
Clay-Chalkville shouldn’t have a problem looking like the state’s top team in an apparent mismatch. Afterward, they will prepare for three consecutive league contests that will lead up to the regular season finale against rival Hewitt-Trussville.
