BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department announced today that detectives are conducting a homicide investigation in the death of John Stitten, 50, of Birmingham. The incident occurred Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 3000 block of 12th Ave North. The suspect has been identified as Gewonda Hudson, 44, of Birmingham.
On the night of the incident, officers from the North Precinct were dispatched to the listed location on a call of a person stabbed. The victim was treated at the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue and transported to UAB Hospital for treatment. On Friday, Nov. 13, the victim died from his injuries at UAB Hospital.
Detectives learned the victim got into a fight with his live-in girlfriend. After the fight ended, the victim went and sat down on the curb and while sitting the suspect came over and stabbed the victim in the neck. The suspect was taken into custody after being identified by witnesses on the scene. The suspect was arrested and charged with attempted murder. Capital murder charges are now pending. The suspect is still in the Jefferson County jail on previous charge.
