TRUSSVILLE – It was a big National Signing Day at Hewitt-Trussville High School on Wednesday.
The Husky football program saw seven players sign national letters of intent while soccer player Megan McGettigan etched her name down with the University of West Alabama.
Quarterback Zac Thomas (Appalachian State), running back Jarrion Street (Ole Miss), fullback Bailey McElwain (Stanford), linebacker Jalen Williams (Columbia), defensive end Jaison Williams (Austin Peay) and offensive linemen Kyle Miskelley (Minot State) and Brandt Sellesky (
Southeast Missouri State) all signed football scholarships in the school’s auditorium.
“These guys have been committed for a long time and they felt good with what they had,” said Hewitt-Trussville football coach Josh Floyd. “From what I’ve been told, there’s never been this many guys actually sign (football) scholarships (at Hewitt-Trussville).”
Floyd then spoke of the challenge it is to get seven players at the podium on National Signing Day.
“It’s not normal anywhere, but hopefully it will happen here again,” said Floyd. “It’s not an easy thing to do.”
Although he loves to see Street take his game to the Southeastern Conference, Floyd will miss his bruising ball carrier, who reached the end zone 17 times as a senior.
“I know he’s going to be successful because he’s a big, physical runner. He’ll be 225 (pounds) in a year or two, so I think he’s going to be an animal on the field. I’m fired up for him,” said Floyd.
Perhaps, no one in the class will face as many transitions from high school to college as McElwain. The linebacker-turned-fullback will make a position change while moving his belongings from Trussville to Palo Alto, Ca.
“He’s a smart kid and a smart football player, so I think he’s able to do it,” said Floyd. “It’ll be a process for him, but I think he’s physically, somewhat, ready (for the college game).”
