IRONDALE — Backyard grillers are set to compete for the best barbecue to benefit Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, April 16. The event will begin at 11 a.m. and will take place in the parking lot of Habitat’s ReStore at 7952 Crestwood Blvd in Irondale.
This amateur, family-friendly competition and festival draws hundreds of people statewide to enjoy live music, kid’s activities such as face painting and moon bounces, and of course, great barbecue. Proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity’s housing ministry. Event tickets are $10.
Last year’s overall winners, Chris Savage and Pat Savage, aka “The Savage Brothers” signed up to participate again this year.
“We live in two different states and this event brings us together each year,” said Chris. “Our main goal is to support the great mission of Habitat for Humanity. We don’t expect anything in return. Winning was just icing on the cake.”
The overall winner receives $2,500 cash and the People’s Choice winner receives $1,000 cash. A first and second place winner in each category is recognized. Categories include chicken, brisket, ribs and sauce. People’s Choice can be anything, from slaw and potato salad to desserts.
“Teams meet the night before the competition to review rules and last-minute details, and then the grills are lit,” says Laura McCain, event volunteer and team coordinator. “Judging begins at 11 a.m. Saturday morning so most teams camp out in the parking lot grilling and hanging out.”
Space is still available for grilling teams to participate. For team registration, tickets and event information, visit habitatbirmingham.org or call 205-780-1234.
