TRUSSVILLE – The Heart of Dixie Quilt Guild is hosting a quilt show July 22-23.
The show will take place at Cahaba Springs Presbyterian Church on Deerfoot Parkway from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. both days. Admission is $5 with children under the age of 12 being free, and all proceeds will be donated to the Quilt Guild’s various charity efforts.
According to Quilt Guild member Brenda Pigott, the organization puts on a show about every three years, but the Guild has been in existence for more than 20 years.
Those in attendance can expect to see different types of quilts, demonstrations of quilting, and there will be door prizes, quilt related items for purchase, information on quilting and quilt guilds in the area, as well as a quilt that will be raffled off.
“We welcome visitors from any skill level, all kinds of people will be there that love to share their wisdom,” Pigott said.
Pigott said she got involved with quilting in college, when she saw a quilting pattern in a magazine and decided she wanted to try her hand at it. Although Pigott said that particular quilt remains unfinished, she picked quilting back up when she got pregnant with her first child, when wanted to make a baby quilt. With the assistance of a co-worker, Pigott finished the quilt and eventually joined the Heart of Dixie Quilt Guild.
“The Guild offers the opportunity to learn things,” Pigott said. “There are women from all walks of life, skill levels and interest levels, so you get a wide range of perspective.”
According to the Guild’s website, the Guild is open to anyone who is interested in the art of quilting, and they seek to promote the skills and values of quilting, and generate growth for knowledge and resources. They meet on the third Tuesday of each month at Cahaba Springs Presbyterian Church at 6:30 p.m.
Pigott said she’s one of the few members under the age of 50 in the group, but they also have three junior members that are 18-years-age or younger.
“We’re still taking quilt entries and there’s a special category just for kids under 18,” Pigott said.
There will be 34 total categories that quilts can be entered in to.
The Heart of Dixie Quilt Guild is a non-profit organization, and all proceeds will go to purchase materials to make quilts for their charity efforts. The Guild makes quilts for the NICU at St. Vincent’s Hospital East, as well as Quilts of Valor, and for foster children.
“The mom and dad of any child in the NICU gets to go pick out a quilt we’ve made for them, and we make quilts for veterans that have never received a quilt of Valor to recognize them for their service,” Pigott said. “For foster children we pick a children’s book and make a quilt themed around that children’s book.”
Pigott said the proceeds from the raffle quilt will also go towards their charity efforts.
