CLAY – No, there is no Paws and Claws Bowl this year.
But there are a pair of football games between Clay-Chalkville High and Hewitt-Trussville High.
Game 1 came Monday night at Cougar Stadium, and it was a thriller.
The Clay JVs rallied for a touchdown with minutes left and then added the crucial extra point to take a 29-28 lead. But the Huskies mushed down the field behind quarterback Grey Ryle and almost pulled it out.
The JV Huskies were set up to attempt a field goal to win the game. A 5-yard penalty for too many men on the field backed Hewitt up, and the 38-yard kick was a tad short.
One second was left, and the Cougars took a knee and celebrated.
“I thought we played good in all three phases,” said coach Stuart Floyd. “The offense moved the ball up and down the field, the defense was getting stops and we had a kickoff return for a touchdown and Drennon Mayhew kicked a field goal.”
Kendall Moultrie had the kick return for the score. Demetrius Davis and Demarcus Burris ran the show at quarterback. Floyd said Logan Pruett and Courtney Braxton stood out.
“It’s always good to beat these guys, when we get a chance to play them,” Floyd said.
Game 2, between the freshman squads, also at Clay, was played Tuesday night.
