Special to The Trussville Tribune
TRUSSVILLE – William J. ‘Billy’ Canary, President/CEO of the Business Council of Alabama (BCA), was the featured speaker for the Trussville Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) monthly luncheon on Thursday, September 15.
Canary has served in his position at the BCA since March 2003. The BCA is the voice of business and industry in Alabama representing more than 750,000 working Alabamians through its member companies that come from all segments of Alabama’s economy. BCA is Alabama’s affiliate organization to the United States Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers.
Canary discussed the new ethics law resulting from the conviction of former House Speaker Mike Hubbard and how it affects businesses and non-profits. He encouraged all to vote in the upcoming elections with the quote, ‘Not voting is not a protest. It’s a surrender.’ He gave a copy of the BCA’s new book, Unfinished Business, to everyone in attendance.
The chamber also recognized its September Customer Service Award recipient. The nominator had this to say: “Michelle Hornsby was on duty at St. Vincent’s East ER when I had to go there recently with severe back issues. The ER was extremely busy and there were no rooms available. I had been waiting in the hallway for over an hour and a half when Michelle opened up a room for me. She immediately started attending to me and apologizing to me for the wait. She told me that she is the Head Nurse on duty and usually doesn’t see patients. My situation was not life threatening; however, she chose to open up a room and help me! She gave me great care, then went to get my mother and son from the waiting room to make sure I was not in the ER room alone. She never once made feel like I was a burden or taking her from her normal responsibilities. When it was time to go, she wheeled me to check-out while my mother pulled the vehicle around and then went to help my son, who had gone to get drinks and snacks. She definitely went above and beyond in her duties and treated me as if were her best friend.”
