From The Trussville Tribune staff reports
BIRMINGHAM –The newly released crime statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation show Birmingham is the third most violent city in the United States with a population of at least 100,000. Only St. Louis and Detroit ranked higher. Huntsville was 59th and Mobile was 99th.
Birmingham was the fifth most violent city the year before, according to the FBI stats for that year.
According to the FBI figures, Birmingham ranked fifth in homicides, trailing St. Louis, Baltimore, Detroit and New Orleans. Montgomery, Mobile and Huntsville all ranked the top 100 for homicides.
The FBI said Birmingham had 79 homicides in 2015, up from 52 in 2014, which was one of the lowest totals in several decades. There have been 74 homicides so far in 2016.
Birmingham’s property crime rate ranked eighth highest in the nation with 13,499 incidents reported.
There were 159 rapes reported, 1,114 robberies, 2,355 aggravated assaults, 3,146 burglaries, 8,838 larcenies, and 1,515 motor vehicle thefts in Birmingham in 2015.

Yep & Birmingham not only joins Center Point at the Cathedral of the Cross on Center Point Pkway but twines all the way thru the city of Center Point to Westchester Dr.

I’ve heard that the way crime statistics are derived for Birmingham are different from many other cities, namely because of how city limits are drawn. Many cities with combined city/county governments are measured county-wide, bringing those statistics down, where Birmingham is measured by its city limits and don’t include any stats from its neighbors.

I can’t wait until our park is finished so we can sit quietly in it and read.lol. Just thought I’d throw that out there.haha

And in all fairness B’ham seems to have at least one murder per day.

I’ve heard the same thing, but I’m not sure how that works. I did notice the FBI has different lists for cities and metropolitan areas. Obviously, including the suburbs would raise the population and lower the per capita numbers. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t change what’s happening in Birmingham.

It’s been this way as long as I can remember. Only difference is now the ghettos have expanded into other areas as well

Birmingham has been in the top 5 for the past several years. They go by the number of people per capita versus the number of crimes. This doesnt mean all the criminals live in bham. It means the most crime is happening within the city limits. Anyone living in the bham city limits should go to their city council meetings and demand for this to be cleaned up. Bham needs curfews etc..to help our police department. The people of bham need to wake up. Just last week, an innocent 4 yr old was murdered over 2 men arguing about a cell phone.

Mayor Bell is doing an excellent job overseeing Birmingham. The city simply follows his lead.

This is 100% not relatable to the downtown Birmingham area that is and has been going through a significant revitalization right now. All these stats are drawn from the surrounding cities that unfortunately get grouped together as “Birmingham”. Don’t let poor and misleading reporting scare you from experiencing what the magic city has to offer. Downtown is actually very safe.

You miss the point of saying BIRMINGHAM. Centerpoint is its own city. Birmingham’s murder rate would be number on if you had Fairfield, Midfield, Pleasant Grove, Hueytown, Centerpoint, Tarrant and other unincorporated areas around the actual city limits. Birmingham exported a big chunk of their problems when Metropolitan Gardens was moved to Centerpoint/Tarrant.
And Brian Wells, as far as getting out of Centerpoint, we had break-ins from 5 guys driving from Ensley in a stolen SUV. You can’t run from crime, crime follows money. Remember that old quote? Why do you rob banks? Because that is where they keep the money.

Ok well said

The article was about Birminham. I made my statement about Center Point bc the city of Birmingham goes thru my city. Center Point ahs had changes since I moved here in 1969 but it’s the elected leaders responsibility to think, plan & act to stay ahead of the change. Add all the section 8 apartments & residential rentals was another reason for our leadership to act quickly yet they did not. If elected leaders are not going to plan to protect their residents then the only other option is to run/move. Property values (retired agent) in Center Point doesn’t allow home owners to sell & buy elsewhere. We’re trapped & Bham is at our doorsteps.

Don’t believe everything the FBI says due to the fact that when they say bad things they expect to get some money to builds up on their quote “needs”. They report bad things then the home office will send more money that’s the way it works. Know how to play the game

This is what happens when a state runs out of money to fund law enforcement and establish special crime units, such as anti-drug and anti-gang units. Alabama, also ranks 48th. in education. Basically, it’s a sh*t hole. But, hey, your football team is awesome (Y)

If crime followed money there would be more crime in Trussville than in Center Point . Criminals know Truss police dept has an excellent reputation & Center Point has 4 contract deputies (2 day & 2 afternoon & zero at night/weekends) serving violations. Jefferson county arrives after crimes to write reports. The 2 deputies that park by my house can’t stop speeders bc they don’t have radar. Of course the FBI report above is on VIOLENT crimes & not robberies. Criminals know Center Point residents have no police protection. *A reminder auto traffic cameras were activated in Center Point Oct 1st per reports with warnings thru October.

Fuck this bullshit

Crime does follow money, but the majority of criminals live outside of where money is. So it is only natural to see a higher crime rate where they live. I own a computer service company that works with alarm companies and video surveillance companies and I see much more crime than is reported on the news. Cities like Hoover, Vestavia, Mountain Brook, Trussville and etc al, have a very good police protection but also have vested interest in keeping the appearance of safety for the image of the city. Talk to a Trussville policeman, ask him where the majority of people they arrest live. The same goes for any city with a good standard of living.
