From The Trussville Tribune Staff Reports
TRUSSVILLE – A teen driving event in Trussville on Thursday taught students about the dangers of DUI.
Alabama ranks fifth in the nation for the number of teens killed in motor vehicle crashes every year, and motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for people ages 16 to 24. Drivers ages 16 to 19 have the highest risk.
Contributing factors include alcohol or drugs, texting while driving and not wearing a seatbelt.
The DUI Experience presented statistics and safety information in an interactive fashion, encouraging students to share lessons learned with peers and family in their community. The DUI Experience featured a hands-on demonstration and teaching stations about the dangers of driving while distracted or under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Students from Springville, Thompson and Trussville High Schools drove go karts wearing “fatal vision” goggles, which simulate impairment from drugs to alcohol. Trooper Curtis Summerville attended as a guest speaker.
