BIRMINGHAM — Members of the Birmingham City Council’s transportation committee may reexamine the ordinance that allowed ridesharing company Uber to set up shop in the city, BirminghamWatch reports.
Monday evening’s committee meeting saw a presentation from Stephanie Jones, a representative of Birmingham Cab Drivers United. Jones argued that Uber’s background checks were not stringent enough, which could be dangerous for members of the public and potentially a legal liability for the city.
The Birmingham City Council originally passed an ordinance that would allow Uber to operate in the city in December 2015. Even then, the ordinance had its opponents; former Councilor Kim Rafferty argued that the ordinance violated the principle of “free enterprise.”
Councilors Darrell O’Quinn and John Hilliard, both members of the transportation committee, said they would review the ordinance in question before following up on the issue.
