BIRMINGHAM — An investigation is underway in Birmingham’s Highland Park area after a shooting left one man dead on Monday night.
The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Rakeem Alexander of Birmingham, according to the Birmingham Police Department.
The shooting occurred inside a apartment at 30th Street South and Clairmont Avenue at about 9 p.m. Monday night.
Officers from the South Precinct responded to the listed location on a male shot. Officers arrived and found the victim lying on the floor suffering from a gunshot wound to the body. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.
Upon further investigation, detectives learned the victim lived at the location with his grandfather, and before the shooting occurred apparently several people were inside the apartment with the victim before multiple shots were fired. Detectives also learned the victim was selling narcotics at this location.
“In this case, the activity surrounding the shooting contributed to the loss of life. This is extremely unfortunate for this family,” said Lt. Sean Edwards with BPD.
