TRUSSVILLE – On March 16 Magnolia Elementary school will host its first school-wide spelling bee for grades third through fifth.
Each class held individual classroom spelling bees and advanced its top three winners from each classroom to the school-wide competition.
“The last week of January, all of our homeroom classes in grades 3-5 held a class qualifying round,” said fourth grade teacher Jessica Wood. “Students who advanced from the qualifying round will have the opportunity to compete in front of the entire school in the school-wide spelling bee.”
Woods said there was not much preparation for the qualifying round, but teachers encouraged students to go home and get ready.
“We recommended students study their prefixes and suffixes,” Wood said. Other suggested preparation included word studies and common spelling patterns.
Woods said students and faculty are both excited about the first annual event.
“We are excited to share this event with the lower elementary grades (K-2),” she said. “It gives the other students something to look forward to and to cheer on their older Magnolia family.”
“We are always looking for ways to make school fun here at Magnolia,” she said. “And find ways where everyone can come together. Although not every child is participating in the spelling bee, but will have that support.”
“I think this will be a wonderful opportunity for our young kids,” said Ryan Hook, fifth grade teacher. Hook said as a child attending school she was involved in spelling bees, and enjoyed partaking in the contests.
Parents and families are invited to the event, which will take place during school hours. For more information, please contact Magnolia Elementary School at (205) 228-3500.
