TRUSSVILLE – A Birmingham man was recently arrested and charged with assault on Feb. 20 after an officer from the Trussville Police Department was called to respond to a report of a theft in progress. In addition to assault and robbery charges, the man also faces charges for drugs, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest, according to Sergeant Michael Bruce from TPD.
The incident occurred at around 8:40 a.m. when a Trussville policeman was dispatched to the Wal-Mart on Trussville Crossings Parkway to a report of theft taking place.
The officer confronted the suspect, identified as Freddie Wright Grant, 58, of Birmingham, at the exit doors of the grocery portion of the Wal-Mart.
According to Bruce, Grant fled on foot as the officer attempted to arrest him. Grant allegedly displayed a box cutter and tried to attack the officer with it.
After a physical struggle, the officer was able to overpower and detain Grant, sustaining only minor cuts and abrasions. He was not in need of medical attention after the struggle, Bruce said.
Grant was searched and found to be in possession of Hydrocodone without a prescription.
Grant was arrested and charged with robbery in the first degree, assault in the second degree of a police officer, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and carrying a concealed weapon. He is being held at the Jefferson County Jail with a bond of $58,600.
