BIRMINGHAM – Officers from the Birmingham Police Department are investigating the death of a man who was killed by a stray bullet from a shootout.
Eric Anthony Roney, 51, was killed while getting out of a vehicle on the 800 block of 4th Ave. W. The incident occurred around 7:55 p.m. on Feb. 22 before Police were dispatched to a report of shots fired. When they arrived on the scene, they found the victim who would be identified as Roney suffering from apparent gunshot wound.
Roney was transported by medics from Birmingham Fire and Rescue to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police determined that a shootout had occurred with an unknown number of suspects. A stray bullet struck Roney as he was leaving his car.
“I am saddened to hear about another senseless killing in our city,” said Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin. “My condolences go out to Eric Roney’s loved ones as our police department continues to investigate his death and find those responsible. Mr. Roney was getting out of his car when a stray bullet struck and killed him. His death should not have happened. As I stated last week, I remain committed to working with the Birmingham Police Department, all city departments and the community to help reduce crime, especially violent crime, in Birmingham.’’
Birmingham Police Chief Orlando Wilson commented on the shooting incident.
“Our condolences go out to the family of Mr. Roney,” he said. “Unfortunately, this is another example of how violence has a grip on the innocent people of this city. As a part of Operation Step Up more officers will be hitting the streets to address issues such as this.”
Anyone with information on the case are asked to call to call the Birmingham Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
