TRUSSVILLE — Hewitt-Trussville Baseball showed a flare for the dramatic on Feb. 22 as they came back for an exciting 6-5 win over Mountain Brook.
The game was tied 5-5 going into the bottom of the 7th. Michael Fowler started the inning reaching base by a hit by pitch. Preston Jones lined out sharply to the left fielder. Caden Kirk reached on an error to put a runner in scoring position with one out. Jacob Bishop lined a single to left, and it looked like the Huskies were going to win.
However, the Spartan left fielder made a strong throw to the plate to retire the potential winning run. Zach Defnall then came to the plate and hit a ball sharply to the right side. Kirk scored to start the celebration.
Hewitt was down 5-3 entering the bottom of the 6th. Julian Sauger came through in the clutch as he smacked a two RBI single to tie the game. Mountain Brook had extended the lead with a run in the top of the 6th.
On Saturday, Hewitt improved to 5-0 on the season with identical 9-1 wins over Alexandria and Southside-Gadsden. Carson Skipper had a dominant day on the mound as he pitched a complete game leading the Huskies to the Game 1 win. Skipper allowed just two hits and he struck out 13 batters. Michael Fowler and Skipper had two hits to lead the Hewitt offensive attack. Tyler Mauldin added a hit and three RBI’s.
In the second game on Saturday, Hewitt defeated Southside-Gadsden 9-1. Walker Sahagun kept the stellar pitching going. Sahagun pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing just three hits while striking out five batters. Zach Defnall and Preston Jones both had three hits each for the Huskies. Tyler Mauldin had two RBI’s.
Softball Opens 2018 Season With a Win:
The 2018 Hewitt-Trussville Softball season is off to a fast start. The Huskies opened with an 11-0 win over Hueytown Thursday night.
Taylor Burt’s team scored early and often Thursday. Hannah Borden’s walk in the first drove in Tate Moseley. One batter later, Molly Cobb singled to drive in Crystal Maze. The Huskies would break the game wide open in the 4th inning. Kaylee Walters scored on a passed ball to make the score 6-0. Borden flied out to center field, and Moseley tagged and scored. Later, Abigail Inman crushed a three-run homer to left center to extend the lead to 11-0.
Molly Cobb pitched four scoreless innings to earn the win. Hayden Neugent pitched the 5th inning to close the game.
Hewitt traveled to Tuscaloosa this weekend for the Patriot Classic and went 2-1. The Huskies began the event with a 4-1 win over Tuscaloosa County. Hayden Neugent pitched well while Crystal Maze, Anyce Harvey, and Molly Cobb all had hits.
Friday night, Hewitt came from behind to defeat Cullman 6-5. Crystal Maze’s double with two outs in the final inning scored two runners to win the game. Kailey Walters and Molly Cobb homered for the Huskies.
The Huskies dropped a 5-0 decision to Vestavia on Saturday. Tate Moseley, Abigail Dorsett, and Hannah Borden all had hits for Hewitt.
