From The Trussville Tribune staff reports
The St. Clair County Schools system is looking for bus drivers to fill a shortage that has been ongoing for the last four months, said the system’s transportation director, Jerry Fuller.
“The current situation isn’t just with St. Clair,” he said. “It’s a constant thing for most schools. We always need bus drivers.”
Fuller said that the shortage has mostly impacted the southern portion of the county. Springville and Margaret are among the cities that have been affected by the shortage. Others include Moody and Odenville.
The shortage has forced the school’s transportation department to hire from the substitute drivers pool, which has been depleted. Several teachers in the county have taken up driving duties. There are 110 bus routes in the county, Fuller said.
Fuller said that they are looking for drivers with qualifications and have experience in operating buses. The process takes several weeks to complete as drivers undergo background checks and approval by the St. Clair County Board of Education.
“We want responsible people,” Fuller said. “We would like to have people who enjoy being around children. We want them to have good background, good driving records, good character and conduct.”
Anyone who is interested in applying may call Fuller’s office at 205-629-6255.
