Dereck Jamaille Walker, 46, who is suspected in the shooting of his ex-wife, Habibba Moneque Walker, was arrested after he turned himself in to authorities in Florida, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred before 8 a.m. yesterday when Walker allegedly broke into his ex-wife’s home in the MacDonald Chapel community in Birmingham and shot her. Habibba Walker was critically injured and taken to a hospital where she remains on life support. Her children, who were present in the home at the time, were unharmed.
Warrants were obtained this afternoon charging Walker with armed burglary in the first degree and attempted murder.
Today, Walker turned himself in to officers from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office after a traffic stop was made. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, he confessed to the crime and showed officers where the gun used in the incident was, which was found in the glove box. c
He was taken to Escambia County Jail to await extradition back to Jefferson County.
