SPRINGVILLE — With upgrades needed for Springville Elementary’s playground, a fundraising effort is being made to meet the costs of the $250,000 project. On May 5, sponsored by Coca-Cola, a food truck rally will be held at the Springville Middle School parking lot to raise funds.
“We’re hoping to raise about $10,000 for our new program,” said Lisa Cohron, a physical education teacher at the elementary and varsity golf coach at the high school. “So that we can have a completely and totally handicap-friendly playground here at Springville Elementary.”
Cohron said that $15,000 has been raised so far. She also said that the staff at the school hopes to have the project – which will be compliant with the American Disabilities Act – completed next year. In the meantime, the school is focused on paying for the project with help from the community.
“I think it will be a great impact on the kids here,” Cohron said. “The playground that we have here was put in in the 1990s and it’s seen its better days. Having a new playground I think will boost moral for all of the kids.”
Upgrades needed are ADA-compliant structures such as ramps that can be accessed by wheelchairs and a poured rubber surface underneath new equipment that will be easier for handicapped children to play on.
Food trucks to be present at the event are: R&R BBQ, Back Porch BBQ, 900 Degrees Pizza, Dreamcakes Bakery, Off the Hook, Masters Tacos, Tasty Treats and Hot Eats, Wicked Haute Dogs, Pops Cool Spot, Main Street Italian Bistro, Main Street Cafe.
Vendors are: Sassy Bre’s Boutique, When Life t-shirts, Covered Bridge Candle Company and McGuire’s Creations. Live music will be performed by Scott Harbuck, the Cool Cats, Shannon Slaughter and his wife Heather Slaughter and a praise band from Clearbranch Church. A kids area will be set up with bouncy houses and face-painting.
Vendors are asked to make a $100 donation for the playground fund to have a 12×12 booth.
The rally at Springville Middle School, located at 6691 US-11, will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 5.
