BIRMINGHAM — A Huffman High School student has died after she was shot in the head last night at a recreation center in Inglenook. Nyteria Spigner, 17, was identified as the victim of the shooting, according to Lt. Pete Wiliston from the Birmingham Police Department.
Last night, officers from the East Precinct responded to an emergency call of someone being treated for injuries at Birmingham Fire Station #23 at 8:45 p.m. When they arrived, they discovered the victim being treated by medics from Birmingham Fire and Rescue. During their investigation, detectives learned that she was at the Inglenook Recreation Center with others when an argument began. The argument led to an individual to produce a gun and started shooting. Nyteria Spigner was struck in the head as she tried to flee from the scene. The driver of the vehicle took her to the fire station.
According to police, a suspect was taken into custody and questioned last night but was released due to “new information discovered during this ongoing investigation.”
No new suspects have been brought in so far. Police continue to investigate.
“Last night’s tragedy in Inglenook is heart breaking,” said Deputy Chief Henry Irby III in a statement. “As a result of not being able to peacefully resolve issues without violence families are now grieving. There are better ways to handle conflict without violence. Working through conflict by communication is the best way to resolve them. Violence is never the answer.”
