TRUSSVILLE — Though it only lasted a few minutes, firefighters, police and locals got a glimpse of a procession of motorcycles traveling a long way to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall in Washington D.C. Today, the procession passed under the bridge on Deerfoot Parkway overlooking I-59.
Called “Run for the Wall” the event sees hundreds of motorcyclists taking to the roads on a journey ending at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The ride was started in 1989 by Vietnam veterans James Gregory and Bill Evans as a way of supporting veterans and to call for “an accounting of all Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action”, according to the website, as well as to remember those who died in combat.
Today, the event was seen by firefighters from the Center Point and Trussville departments and by police. A large American flag was on display on the overpass as Run for the Wall participants rode by and waved to bystanders. Local residents and motorcycle enthusiasts lined the bridge with American flags in hand to show their support.
