When Linda Walker Channell’s father founded Darrell Walker Personnel in 1953, he became a pioneer in the personnel staffing industry.
“I’ve always respected him for the fact that this wasn’t a common type of business when he started it,” Channell said. “He paved the way for so many others in the staffing industry and was instrumental in setting the standard for it throughout the state.”
From the beginning, Walker realized his success would largely hinge on two things: quality relationships and excellent service. So, armed with little more than a can-do, anything-is-possible attitude, he set about making those aspects of his business a priority, and the company thrived.
In the process, those traits became so deeply ingrained in the company’s culture that three generations later, they continue to define Darrell Walker Workforce, a successor company run by Channel that caters to the needs of companies seeking to fill job openings and workers who need to make a living.
“We exist to ‘help individuals find meaningful employment and companies find valuable employees,’” said Channell. “Seventy-five percent of our temporary staffing is in the industrial area, and that’s where the word ‘workforce’ in our company name really comes in. We also have a division that handles professional recruiting and staffing.”
But within the walls of Darrell Walker Workforce are the company’s own outstanding workforce, including Channell’s two daughters and grandson.
“Our staff works extremely hard and are dedicated to their jobs,” she said. “Their hearts and souls are in this business, and they’re such a special group. I feel like anybody – an employer or a prospective employee – would be comfortable putting their staffing needs in our people’s hands.
“I can’t say enough good things about them and I’m very proud of the integrity and professionalism with which they do their jobs. Without them, this company wouldn’t be where it is.”
But what Channell didn’t say is evident. As president of the company, she sets the tone for how the staff operates, and in that regard, the success of her business comes down to one thing: a company-wide attitude of service that begins at the top.
“I get a lot of personal satisfaction out of dealing with people, and I like helping them,” she said. “I’m so thankful my father didn’t go into another business. This is a very rewarding line of work to be in. We’re in a position to help companies and individuals and in doing so, we can be a positive force, not only for people who need jobs, but for the entire community.”
And it’s through that heart for helping that Channell sees that the little things she and her staff do every day can add up to big things in the lives of others.
“Nothing on earth is more important to a person, other than their family, than their livelihood,” she said, “and we want to help them make the most of it.”
