BIRMINGHAM — A carjacking ended today after two suspects crashed into two Birmingham Police vehicles leaving one officer injured.
According to AL.com, the incident began with a carjacking of a Jeep on Nineth Avenue North innthe Smithfield community. An officer, who was canvassing the area, spotted the stolen Jeep, and called for backup.
Sgt. Johnny Williams said because the officer did not want the suspects to flee the scene, he did not use his emergency lights nor sirens. Soon after, the suspects pulled into the parking lot at Parker High School and the police followed behind.
Williams said that the suspects tried to run over the initial officer who had followed them to the parking lot, sideswiped the officer’s cruiser and then struck the other cruiser head on.
Both officers were taken to the hospital but one was admitted with non-lifethreatening injuries. Both suspects are in custody and pending formal charges.
