On that date, just after 2:15 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the scene and discovered, upon arrival, the body of 22-year-old Austin Lee Nunn. A medical investigation later revealed the cause of death to be a gunshot wound.
Working with information that a red SUV had been had been observed in the area around the time of the murder, investigators were able to link the vehicle to the victim by cross referencing mobile phone records for the deceased and vehicle registrations corresponding to Nunn’s contacts.
Once this link was established, detectives contacted the owners of a red SUV and were advised that the 15-year-old youth had been using the vehicle on the day of the murder.
After locating the suspect, detectives questioned him about events on the day of the murder; during the questioning he informed investigators that he had committed the shooting during the course of a drug deal taking place in Nunn’s residence.
After being arrested and charged with capital murder the boy was taken to the Jefferson County Youth Detention Center. Police have not released the name of the suspect.
