PELL CITY — Police efforts to crack down on shoplifting in Pell City and at the Bankhead Crossings Walmart have been producing results, according to WIAT.
Pell City Police Chief Paul Irwin said that 19 arrests for shoplifting were made in the first 10 days of December.
“A lot of them are stealing because they’re addicted to drugs, or they’re doing it for excitement, or they’re doing it just because they’re greedy,” Irwin said. “They have the money to pay for the items. They’re just not because they’re greedy.”
According to WIAT, a lot of the incidents have been petty thefts, however those cases are taken seriously, as well.
“When they’re prosecuted here in Pell City for shoplifting, there’s a mandatory jail sentence that goes along with it,” Irwin said.
