TUSCALOOSA — A federal judge in Tuscaloosa has reduced former Birmingham mayor Larry Langford’s prison sentence to time served. Langford can be released from the federal prison in Kentucky as soon as his health allows and travel arrangements can be made. Langford will then be subject to house arrest for up to three years.
U.S. District Judge Scott Coogler on Friday issued a ruling stating that Langford “is considered by the Bureau of Prisons to be terminal, with a life expectancy of 18 months or less.” Coogler is the presiding judge in Langford’s case and was the judge who originally sentenced him to federal prison for 15 years for bribery and corruption.
“The Acting Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons contends, and the Court agrees, that the defendant’s terminal medical condition and limited life expectancy constitute extraordinary and compelling reasons warranting the requested reduction,” Coogler’s ruling stated.
The ruling said the Langford will be subject to a supervised release that includes up to 36 months of home confinement and electronic monitoring by the U.S. Probation Office.
