BIRMINGHAM — Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin released a statement in response to the shooting death of Birmingham Police Sgt. Wytasha Carter on Sunday.
Wytasha died in the line of duty while investigating vehicle break-ins that occurred in downtown Birmingham. Another officer was critically injured during the incident.
“Sgt. Wytasha Carter gave his life early this morning for the city he served,” said Woodfin. “This husband and father was a true public servant and will be honored by each of us.
“As this investigation continues, I ask that everyone pause and reflect on how our Birmingham police officers go out everyday to protect our community.”
The mayor’s statement also served to remind the public to be in prayer for the second officer that had been injured.
“We also remain in prayer for the second officer who was shot along with Sgt. Carter,” Woodfin said. “He is currently in critical condition.”
Woodfin’s statement also reminded the public to have faith in the city’s police.
“This is a time of mourning for our city, but please know our police officers are dedicated to justice and continued service for the people of Birmingham,” he said.
