ODENVILLE — Muscle car enthusiasts, and Mustang fans in particular, have reason for celebration as the brand-new Mustang Museum of America opened to the public on Saturday.
The museum boasts nearly 100 mustangs on display from every generation up to 2015, including the highly sought after 1964-1/2.
The museum is located in the city of Odenville and is also the home of Bob Powell who, over four years ago, envisioned building a museum dedicated to the Ford Mustang. Growing up in the 60s and 70s, a time period often known as the golden age of muscle cars, Powell had always been around and worked on cars, mostly Fords, so the Mustang was a natural focus for his collection. That collection is now on display at the museum. Many other Mustang enthusiasts have either loaned or donated their vehicles to the collection.
“We could not be more excited to have this amazing museum here in Odenville,” said Odenville Mayor Buck Christian. “The owners have taken such care in collecting and displaying these immaculate vehicles, and we hope to see many visitors come to Odenville to see their collection. We also hope they will spend the day here and visit some of our other local restaurants and businesses.”
The museum is housed in a new 31,000 square foot building at 49 Foreman Farm Road in Odenville, directly behind Fred’s on Highway 411. The museum has on display at least one Mustang from every production year from 1964-1/2 to 2015, and also has many special models on displays including some that may be the only one remaining in existence. It also has the largest collection of Mustang highway patrol and police vehicles in the world and is the only museum open in the United States that is totally dedicated to the Ford Mustang.
“This museum is worth coming to see,” said Odenville Area Chamber of Commerce President Bruce Mardis. “It is always great to see new businesses come into town and add to the offerings of our community.”
The Mustang Museum of America is open Thursday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, with a prior arrangement, the museum can be opened at other times. There is a $15 admission fee to tour the museum showroom, however, there are membership opportunities that provide free admission during the membership period. Families of four our more qualify for a special price of $45. The museum has a gift shop with t-shirts, hats and other items for sale to members and visitors. The site can be found online at MustangMuseumofAmerica.com.
