BALDWIN COUNTY — Four people died in a crash along Interstate 10 in Baldwin County after a law enforcement chase Monday afternoon.
According to WIAT, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office said a pursuit began shortly after law enforcement attempted to perform a traffic stop.
The pursuit had it’s beginning on eastbound I-10 in the area of the Loxley exit. The suspect departed the Interstate at the Wilcox exit before turning around in the westbound direction, said WIAT.
The pursuit went on for over a mile when the suspect vehicle performed a U-turn. The suspect vehicle was then traveling in the wrong direction on the westbound lane when it struck another vehicle head-on. The suspect vehicle flipped over an Interstate guard rail before catching on fire, said WIAT.
WIAT said three individuals inside the suspect vehicle died, as did a passenger in the vehicle that was struck by the suspect. The driver of the suspect vehicle was taken to University Hospital in Mobile via airlift.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the event.
Westbound lanes of I-10, between the Loxley and Baldwin Beach Express exits, are closed and will likely remain closed for a minimum of three to four hours.
