Update: 2 month old girl injured in I-59 wreck dies

According to Audra Davis of the Alabama State Troopers, the 2 month old girl injured in an early morning crash has died.

Carlos Lopez-Cortes, 27, of Ft Payne was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident five miles north of Springville at 12:50 am Sunday morning.

Maria Ester Ponce-Mendoza, 28, of Ft Payne and Jovieta Cortes, 47, of Crossville were injured and transported to UAB.

A 12 year old from Crossville and three children, ages 8, 6, 3, and 2 months, from Ft Payne were all transported to Children’s Hospital where the infant died from the injuries sustained in the crash.

The victims were traveling in a 1994 GMC Suburban when the accident occurred. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time.
