The Clay City Council on Tuesday voted to name Jan. 23 Christina Heichelbech Day in the city.
Christina Nicole Heichelbech, 16, died during the Jan. 23, 2012, EF-3 tornado that devastated the city. Heichelbech was a student at the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School, a member of the Valley Singers, an inductee to the Spanish Honor Society and a recipient of a full scholarship to Auburn University to study veterinary medicine.
Heichelbech volunteered at the Clay-Chalkville Animal Clinic on Old Springville Road in Clay. The Greater Birmingham Humane Society established a fund in Heichelbech’s honor.
According to city officials, her parents, Darrell and Carol, were very excited about the honor the city was bestowing upon their daughter. They were unable to attend the meeting.
